How to Distinguish Genuine Leather from Synthetic Leather

Distinguishing genuine leather from synthetic leather can be challenging, but by paying attention to certain visual and tactile features, you can tell them apart.

Visual and Tactile Differences Between Genuine and Synthetic Leather

1. Appearance and Texture

Genuine leather has a natural and irregular texture. If you look closely, you’ll notice that the surface of genuine leather has small lines and pores that naturally occur in animal hides. In contrast, synthetic leather usually has a uniform and flawless surface due to industrial production processes.

2. Touch

Genuine leather feels soft and warm to the touch and becomes softer and more flexible over time. On the other hand, synthetic leather often feels cold and plastic-like and may crack or stiffen over time.

3. Smell

One simple way to distinguish genuine leather from synthetic leather is by its smell. Genuine leather has a distinctive, natural smell due to the tanning process. In contrast, synthetic leather smells like plastic or chemicals, which is easily recognizable.

Simple Tests to Identify Genuine Leather

1. Water Test

Genuine leather absorbs water due to its natural pores. If you drop a few drops of water on the surface of the leather, genuine leather will absorb the water and create a darker spot that returns to its original state after drying. In contrast, synthetic leather does not absorb water, and the water droplets remain on the surface.

2. Heat Test

Genuine leather is more resistant to heat and does not burn quickly when exposed to flame or direct heat, emitting a smell similar to burnt hair. However, synthetic leather, due to its plastic content, melts quickly and emits a burnt plastic smell.

3. Bend Test

Genuine leather easily returns to its original state and does not crack when bent. In contrast, synthetic leather may crack or lose its shape when bent.

By paying attention to these visual and tactile differences and performing simple tests, you can effectively distinguish genuine leather from synthetic leather. This knowledge can help you make more informed decisions when purchasing leather products.
